Many type foundries include a "pinmark" on their individual letters. Sometimes they also include the point size.

The Cincinnati Type Foundry included a pinmark on every letter. Many of the original spacing is also included with the same pinmark (this is rare for our fonts, where most of the spacing was mixed up between cases).
